Life with a 3-and-a-half-year-old kid

The time when we can talk with him (and find all kinds of stuff) has arrived. For us, it was somewhat unknown what he does every day at kindergarten. Sure we got many pictures and the teachers would tell us anything we asked and their schedule.

But now we can find directly from our son through his own eyes. Sure we still have to ask the teachers just to make sure he is not making stuff up or that he is confusing some events.

Now he tells us which kids he plays with, and who his best friend is. Who he likes and who he doesn’t. Who cries, who misses his mom, and all kinds of drama.

One of my favorite stories is about why some kids cry. And he responded that they miss their mommies. So we asked if he misses us too. Of course, he does. But he also knows we are coming back for him.

And the great part is the association he made. He told us he has to sleep once and eat 3 times. My guess is that he is counting that and then he knows how long until we come to get him.

One thing that kind of messed with me is the fact that he still gets into accidents. I thought that since he is now bigger those are behind us now. Nope. The famous phrase from the same movie. I recommend you give it a shoot, I enjoyed it.

He got into a bike accident at kindergarten. Luckily it wasn’t too bad but he did have a bruise/scratch close to his eyes. I got used to them on feet or hands but anything close to his head doesn’t sit well with me. I just hope he learns from them and thinks twice about doing the same stunt.

He is weaving stuff both physically and mentally. He found a ball of yarn and he started unfolding it throughout the room. Then he started connecting toys to it. As his mind is weaving new connections so is he. There are toys connected to a bottle of water and he is marching proudly with them through the house screaming: “Look, dad. Look what I did”.

What about you? What are some of the stories you remember about this wondrous age?

If you get a chance check out my book.

Side by side is a book about the first years of parenting. Both the beauty and the hidden side of parenting. The long nights and troubled days. Parents who try and fail and then try again. And how your little one puts a smile on your face and you forget everything just in time to start a new challenging day. It follows the first 2 years of a new dad and his journey, side by side, along with his son.

  1. I have so many memories… from 6 different kids! What I most love with all of them is taking walks in the neighborhood. The questions, stopping to watch a squirrel, just talking about random things… Enjoy each day!
